Transcription Sites and Help

The following are sites that provide searchable databases of tombstone transcriptions, links to related sites (such as obituaries or funeral homes), or -- should you feel inspired to launch your own cemetery transcription project - information on how to do this so that your results offer the maximum value to the genealogical world:

  • Established in 1997, Steve Johnson's Cemetery Records Online, a terrific site with a searchable database of burial records and tombstone inscriptions from 1,405 cemeteries online, as well as many other cemetery resources. Recently teamed up with Cemetery Junction (immediately below) http://interment.net/
  • Illya D'Addezio's Cemetery Junction hosts the largest collection of active and retired United States cemetery addresses and links, along with directories of obituaries, funeral homes and a growing virtual cemetery. Cemetery Junction has been online since 1998 and contains information on over 15,000 cemeteries. As a result of the partnership mentioned above, all of the cemeteries transcribed in the Cemetery Records Online database now appear within the Cemetery Junction state-by-state directory, as well as in all searches. http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/
