Burial Records

Burial records tend to be less used than baptism and marriage records, but they, too, have secrets to reveal. Aside from telling you what ultimately happened to your ancestor, they might tell you an immigrant ancestor's place of birth, give you a surviving spouse or parent's name, or provide "leads" to follow. For example, if it says, "widowed," you know the spouse has already died and to look for another death record. If it says, "killed," look in a local newspaper for more details. It's also important to bear in mind that many churches originally recorded burials rather than deaths, and some still do. See the following table for still other details that may appear in a burial record.
