Behind The Scenes
"Joseph" was produced in 2004 and 2005 as part of Brigham Young University's celebration of the 200th anniversary of birth of Joseph Smith. It was produced by BYU Broadcasting and BYU Relgious Education. It premiered in September, 2005.
The series was written by leading Church History scholars from Brigham Young University and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The writers of the series also were experts appearing in the series. Dr. Susan Easton Black, host of the series, oversaw the writing of the series along with BYU Religious Education Dean Andrew C. Skinner. Dr. Black and Dean Skinner serve as Executive Producers of the series along with John Reim and Sterling Van Wagenen. Diena Simmons was the Supervising Producer of the series.
The series was shot and edited in High-Definition video at church historic sites at various times of the year. Efforts were made to shoot the historic locations at the time of year that key historic events happened at the locations. Footage at the Smith Family Farm in Palmyra, New York and at the Hill Cumorah was shot on September 21 and 22, 2004, key anniversary dates for the visitations of the Angel Moroni to Joseph Smith and when Joseph received the plates. Footage at the Carthage Jail was shot on June 27, 2005, the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Prophet.
Producer of the series is Michael Hunter of BYU Broadcasting who oversaw all aspects of the production of the series. Jordan Ormond, BYU student in Broadcast Journalism, was co-producer and had the key responsibility of finding and clearing copyrights for hundreds of images used in the series. BYU Broadcasting's Rob Sibley directed the series. Photography was by Craig Camp and Jon Anderson. Video post-production was supervised by Bryan Mangum with BYU English major Jim Dalrymple as the editor. Audio acquisition and post-production was supervised by Scott Sandstrom.
